Martyrdom of the Báb
In the Súfí tradition, there are two attitudes that lead to the state of contentment (ridá): the one is gratitude (shukr), the other perseverance (sabr). In joyful circumstances, gratitude guards the sálik against spiritual conceit; in painful circumstances, perseverance guards the sálik against spiritual resentment. Súfís of the Naqshbandí-Mujaddidí tradition are taught to apply either the one or the other in joyful and painful situations respectively. The practice of perseverance allows us to accept the grace of gratitude; the fruit of sorrow is also the source of joy. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
